Brandon Murphy is a graduate of Delta High School, Ball State University and the University of Mississippi School of Law. He commenced his law practice in 2011, joining the firm of Cannon & Bruns. By 2015, Murphy was named partner and became the Managing Attorney of Cannon Bruns & Murphy, LLC. In 2017, Murphy joined the faculty at Ball State University in its criminal justice department and teaches courses on policing, courts, criminal law, evidence and procedure.
Early in his practice, Murphy focused in indigent defense of those accused of crimes over a broad geographical area. In 2012, Murphy was appointed as a Deputy Public Defender for Delaware County (Muncie) and handled hundreds of criminal cases and was lead defense counsel in jury trials ranging in severity from misdemeanors to murder. Murphy has served as First Deputy Public Defender and the Chief Public Defender of Jay County, Indiana.
Mr. Murphy maintains a general law practice which focuses on criminal defense, municipal law, estate planning and administration. Murphy has been appointed to represent the City of Hartford City and the Delaware County Drainage Board (2015 – Present). Murphy is frequently retained by clients facing criminal charges or disciplinary proceedings and often represents college students facing charges in the Muncie City Court.
Murphy is an appellate advocate who has authored over twenty (20) appellate briefs with three (3) published decisions in Heather Herren v. Jerry Dishman, 1 N.E.3d 697 (Ind. Ct. App. 2013), In Re: the Matter of C.L., A Delinquent v. State of Indiana, 2 N.E.3d 798 (Ind. Ct. App. 2014) and Galen Byers v. State of Indiana, 19A-CR-246, ___ N.E.3d ____ (Ind. Ct.
